UPGRADED ANTI-SPAM FILTERING TECHNOLOGY
Our email service now includes additional new and highly respected Anti-Spam filtering technology integrated into the servers. This filtering technology uses a wide variety of local and network tests to determine if a email is Spam. These tests includes Bayesian methods, email header analysis, email body analysis, email content and email formatting. This makes it harder for spammers to identify one aspect which they can craft their messages to work around.
This is part of our ongoing efforts to proactively deal with the growth in email traffic (good and bad).

OTHER RECENT NEWS

The following messages have been sent over the last few months, please take note of the new settings and ensure these are introduced by the end of January 2005. Those of you that have changed your server settings need not change them again.

Latest news for those clients that have had problems with BT Internet connections.

We have just been informed that our datacentre services have been told by BT that the situation has been resolved, be aware that this may take a few hours for the resolution to take effect.

If you have any queries about the newsletter please do not hesitate to call or email in.

  05.10.2004

Over the last couple of days we have found that some of our customers using BT Internet and Openworld connections are experiencing problems connecting to ALL services hosted in the South West.

The response from our datacentre services is as follows: "Could you check with your customers that the BT DNS they are using are the ones BT are allocating to them, as another of our customers has been told by BT to use different DNS setting as the ones he had been using were old DNS no longer allocated by BT."

We suggest that BT Customers contact them to ensure you have the latest settings.

We have provided a quick outline on how to change your settings (Windows XP)

1. Go to your Network connection via the control panel
2. Right Click on your 'Local Area Connection' and choose 'Properties'
3. Select the 'Internet Protocol' and then click on the 'Properties' button
4. You should now have a screen with DNS server addresses at the bottom of the box. This is what we will change.
5. Make a note of the settings now before you start.
6. You need to have the 'Use the following DNS addresses' ticked.
7. You can now update the DNS addresses with one of the pairs of DNS below.
8. Once you have changed this then click OK and OK again to save your settings.

You should now be able to use our services succesfully.

If you have any queries about the newsletter please do not hesitate to call or email in.

There are currently a large number of viruses being circulating around the email boxes, these will come in from a variety of sources.

As always, Numo Group (OneStopNames) discourage the opening of unknown attachments that haven't come from a trusted source, by doing this you open your system to any number of viruses.
Numo Group currently catches approximately 90% of the viruses that are sent to clients to help with the control of virus infection

When such a virus is detected and cleaned you may have a message from Numo Group Virus Alert, this is to inform you who tried to send the message to you, this may be useful if it is a relevant contact of yours, if it is not then you can delete this with impunity.

This email is an alert regarding the latest virus to be causing a problem to email users.

It is called 'Netsky' which seems to come from a talkingpoint@bbc.co.uk address.

Most computer security companies rated the worm a medium-grade threat, describing it more of an annoyance rather than a malicious virus that destroys files or makes computer vulnerable to attacks.

The worm, once activated, forwards itself to e-mail addresses found on an infected computer's hard drive.

Both businesses and consumers were being hit by the fast-spreading worm.

VIRUS NEWS -

In the last couple of days we have seen a higher than normal level of email virus traffic. This email is being sent to ensure you are aware of a new variant of the Mydoom or Novarg worm - the Mydoom.b worm - that was discovered on 28 January 2004 and is causing significant impact on many mail servers and general internet traffic. This new variant can impede access to some Web sites.

The worm attempts to entice users into opening an e-mail message that has an attached file. If the attached file is opened, the worm installs malicious code on the user's system and sends itself to all contacts in the user's address book.

This rapidly-spreading, mass-mailer virus affects:

. Microsoft Outlook
. Microsoft Outlook Express
. Web-based e-mail programs

If you receive a questionable e-mail message that contains an attachment - especially if it has a .zip file extension-do not open the attachment. If you cannot confirm with the sender that the message is legitimate and that the attachment is safe, delete the message immediately.

In an effort to impede this virus from spreading we have upgraded our email virus checking and email filtering systems.

If you have any queries about the newsletter please do not hesitate to call or email in.

If you are having difficulty collecting your email due to large numbers of messages in your mailbox or if your email program is timing out (including webmail), then you may have the MyDoom virus on your system.

  29.01.2004

Over the last 72 hours you may have noticed some problems with our email service.

This was due to a higher than normal receipt of viruses into our system. Unfortunately, this caused a delay to the system, as it dealt with the viruses and cleaned the recognised signatures. These were sent in a format that was difficult to stop and ban, so it has taken some time to clean the system.

You may have received 'delay' or 'unable to deliver' notices from our server to inform you of the success of your send.

You should now find the system performance increasing over the next 24hrs as the backlog of emails are cleared and cleaned.

We apologise for any inconvenience at this time.
